Hey there!
I was cleaning out my makeup bag the other day and I started wondering about some of the stuff I found in there. I mean, my flavored lip balms from 6th grade are probably still good. Right? I decided to do a little research just to be safe, and I was surprised to learn that makeup can actually expire. If you have products that are more than a few months old, they might not work as well as they used to. Or even worse, they could be harvesting acne-causing bacteria. So just because your makeup doesn’t start growing mold or smelling funny, that doesn’t mean it lasts forever. If you want to keep your skin, eyes, nails, and hair healthy, here’s the breakdown on what to toss and what to keep.
I also found this while I was researching:
- Nail polish – 2 years
- Moisturizer – up to 3 years
- Lip gloss or lipstick – 1 to 2 years
- Mascara – 3 to 4 months
- Eyeliner pencils –18 to 24 months if sharpened regularly
- Eyeshadow – 12 to 18 months
- Blush 6 to 9 months
Now here are a few tips to make your makeup last longer…
1. Wash your hands before applying makeup.
2. Use a brush to apply products (even lipstick or lip gloss) instead of your finger to eliminate the spread of bacteria.
3. Wash your brushes regularly! A gentle face wash or even mild dish soap works great.
4. Keep your cosmetic containers shut tightly and store them in a cool, dry place.
5. Keep track of when you buy your beauty products. It helps to write the date they were opened on them with sharpie.
