ARE YOU "THE GOOGLE GENERATION"?

by: Ifigenia Aristidou

Can you name every icon on the cover? Of course you can. You are a member of the so-called Google Generation, born after the dawn of "The Information Age".
You probably started playing video games before you started school. Maybe you even learned to read and count with the helo of some kind ok software program. So it makes perfect sense that pointing and clicking (or using touch-screens) is almost second nature to you. Which helps explain why "connecting" to the virtual world is also second nature - and not the "un-real" experience it is for many people older than you.

FACEBOOK FRIENDS
From cell phones to laptops to game consoles, you're comfortable with a choise of devices that allow you to stay connected with friends and family wherever you are. And where you mostly are, is in the friendly land of Facebook.
With 400 million users, Facebook is now the world's most popular web site (even more popular that Google). Twitter has also taken off rapidly - you can now sign up to get the day's "Top Tweets" - and a large number of sites similar to Twitter are now popping up to focus on more community-like groupings of people with shared interests (like looking for jobs in Internet Technology, for example). Meanwhile, you use your cell-phones for text- and video-messaging more often than to make actual phone calls.
Social networking is popular because it's fast, easy, immediate, and to the point. It allows people to stay in touch at any given moment, to share ideas and experiences with others, to make new friends and become part of online communities. Your generation does not see a huge difference between on-line friends and classmates, between the virtual and real world. You want to be connected in both.

MOBBING
Social networks are not just for virtual relationships; today, a growing number of gatherings organised online are taking place in the physical world. One increasingly popular phenomenon is called a "virtual mob". The "mob" may sound like a criminal organisation, but here, it stands fot mobilisation - getting large numbers of people moving. Virtual mobs are people who came together for a creative mini-event in a neighbourhood, a street, a train station.... Recently, in New York City, 300 people came together on a large avenue in Manhattan to walk virtual dogs!
Much to the dismay of public authorities, some young people used "mobbing" idea to organise public drinking parties. In response to the negative attention the parties got, some of the same young people then decided to organise other events, such as giant games of hide-and-seek -- in IKEA stores!

GPS MEETS TWITTER
The next big thing, they tell us, is going to be geo-social networking. Foursquare is an Internet and mobile phone application that allows users to connect with and geographicaly locate friends and update their location. Users can choose to have their Twitter and/or their Facebook accounts updated when they check in. I'm not sure I would want everyone to know where I am and what I'm doing, but then, I do not understand why Ashton Kutcher has millions of "followers" either.
What's new about the Foursquare concept, though, is that it actually works to physically brinf together not thousands of people, just a small number of individuals. Imagine that you are at a local shoppng mall and you check in on Fuorsquare to give your location. Your location is updated on Facebook and Twitter, and it so happens that one of your on-line friends is also at the mall the same time. They receive an alert by cell-phone indicating your location, ans decide to contact you by SMS, so you can meet for coffee.
Technologically speaking, this is nothing revolutionary. But perhaps something evolutionary is taking place: a trend in which the virtual world leads us back to the real world. After all, as much fun as on-line social networking is, many people stil believe that nothing beats knowing your friends in real life!

Lindsay Lohan's Superhero Photo Shoot for Harper's Bazaar

I think Lindsay Lohan did a pretty good job at this shoot especially since their main theme is to make it look like candids, it's almost as if she's a totally different person.

Heath Ledger's Apartment is for Rent

Posted by abohan 0 komentar

Looking for a spiffy new place? Corcoran has got just the thing! A three-bedroom, two-bath, 4,400-square-foot space with a gourmet kitchen, office, and balcony overlooking the heart of Soho. Amenities include fifteen-foot tin ceilings, cast-iron columns, exposed-brick walls, a wood-burning fireplace, and one unique feature that will really impress your friends and co-workers: It's the very apartment in which Heath Ledger died.

Yes, a scant two weeks after Ledger overdosed in his apartment at 421 Broome Street, his place is apparently already on the market. This is New York, after all, and as one broker tells the Post, "You don't wait around in a hot rental market like this." The cocktail-party anecdote that living in the deceased actor's pad will provide is going to cost you, though: According to the Post, the place is going for $25,000 a month now, $3,000 up from what Ledger started renting it for back in September. But that’s nothing compared with what they're going to start asking for it once someone says it's haunted.
