1977-1981: the international success of the Dutch pop scene

Luv' was launched in 1977 by record producers/songwriters Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer in order to conquer the European pop charts. The ladies succeeded beyond their expectations. They won the "1979 Conamus Export Prize" for being "Holland's best export act" thanks to their good record sales in Benelux, German speaking countries, Denmark, South Africa, New Zealand and Mexico. During their heyday, other Dutch pop acts tried their luck abroad and were succesfull in the international marketplace. Here's a list of bands and singers (from the Netherlands) based on their foreign chart performances between 1977 and 1981 (a period of intense activity for Luv').

A 1979 promo compilation released by Conamus/Buma Cultuur (featuring Luv', Patricia Paay, Golden Earring, Teach In and many other Dutch acts). This record was distributed during music fairs like the MIDEM.

* Pussycat

Dutch band Pussycat (featuring Toni Willé as a lead singer) enjoyed international success with their signature song "Mississippi" in 1976 and thus won a "Conamus Export Prize". When Luv' released their first single ("My Man"), Pussycat had a hit single entitled "My Broken Souvenirs".

* Patricia Paay

Before her triumph with "The Star Sisters" in 1983 and her career as a judge on "Holland's Got Talent", the diva covered Kelly Marie's "Who's That Lady With My Man" which became a hit record in Holland, Belgium and Germany in early 1977.

* George Baker Selection

George Baker Selection received the "1975 Conamus Export Prize" thanks to the international popularity of "Una Paloma Blanca". Other hits followed. Among them was the 1977 pop song "Beautiful Rose".

* Champagne

This pop quartet inspired by ABBA won the "1977 Conamus Export Award". One of their biggest hit was "Oh Me, Oh My, Goodbye".

* Vader Abraham

Pierre Kartner (better known as "Vader Abraham") won the "1978 Conamus Export Prize" thanks to the huge success of his "Smurf song" (recorded in several languages).

* Teach In

This band reached its peak with its victory at the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest. The pop formation went through line-up changes and in 1978 the single "Dear John" did well on the Dutch hit parade and the neighbouring territories.

* Snoopy

This Pop/disco duo was one of Luv's rivals and their hit single "No Time For A Tango" sold well in Benelux and German speaking countries.

* Earth & Fire

This progressive rock group (fronted by Jerney Kaagman, a judge on "Idols" in the 2000s) was awarded the "1980 Conamus Export Prize" thanks to the European popularity of their single "Weekend".

* Babe

This girl group was the brainchild of Peter Koelewijn and wanted to follow in the footsteps of Luv'.

The Drunken Sailor (1980)

* Dolly Dots

Luv's toughest competitors were the "Dolly Dots" which were formed in 1979. The sextet scored more hits in their homeland than Luv'. They even had a platinum record with "Radio" in Japan. Their 1981 single "P.S." reached the Top 50 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play in the USA. But on the whole they never achieved the level of Luv's record sales.

* Maywood

This duo formed by two sisters (Alice May and Caren Wood) scored their biggest hit single "Late At Night" in 1980. Apart from the Benelux, they were fortunate in Germany, Sweden and South Africa. They even did the background vocals on José's "I Will Follow Him" in 1982.

* Spargo

This Pop/funk/disco band had the time of their lives with "You and Me" which charted in several European countries in 1980.

* Doris D & The Pins

Piet Souer (who co-wrote Luv's repertoire with Hans van Hemert) produced the debut record of this girl group (fronted by Debbie Jenner). The energetic and catchy songs he did with Doris D & The Pins didn't achieve the level of success of Luv'.

* Stars on 45

This studio group (winner of the "1981 Conamus Export Prize") was created by Jaap Eggermont. The debut single, a medley of 1960's pop classics performed on a disco beat, was a transatlantic smash hit. It reached #1 almost everywhere.
