Due to the relaunch of their duo, Bonnie St Claire and José Hoebee gave interviews to the press. One of my Facebook friends Karin Angeleyes has recently posted scans of articles published in two celebrity gossip magazines "Party" and "Story":

Björn Ulvaeus on "Bonnie & José in Sweden" (NCRV, 1986)
In 1986, Dutch TV channel NCRV aired the special "Bonnie & José in Sweden" which featured Bonnie St. Claire and José Hoebee performing cover versions of ABBA songs. Björn Ulvaeus (of ABBA) appeared on this program and gave an interview in which he approved the recordings of the ladies. It was years before the revival of interest in ABBA's music (ABBA Gold, Mamma Mia!-The Musical, Madonna's Hung Up using a sample of Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!...). Karin Angeleyes posted on Facebook the video of Björn telling "he was happy about the Dutch covers of Bonnie & José". To watch it, click here.

Before her career in show business, Patty Brard was a secretary and sometimes referred to this aspect of her past in interviews. She had received a multilangual training at "Schoevers", Holland's most famous institute which provides secretarial courses. By the way, my mother did the same and later worked at Philips lighting and Philips France. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this institute, Peter de Waard and Petra van den Brink wrote a book entitled "De meisjes van Schroevers". They told the fascinating story of this organization created by Dutch business man Adriaan Schoevers and the role it played in the emancipation of working women in the Netherlands. Among the former "girls from Schoevers" are famous ladies like Annie M.G. Schmidt, Hanneke Groenteman, Annemarie Jorritsma, Anita Witzier, Inge de Bruijn,Caroline Tensenand Patty Brard.

José Hoebee and Dutch legendary singer Jacques Herb took part in a charity golf tournament in Almere on September 20th. The aim of this sport event was to collect money for Stichting BHVLP (a foundation dedicated to fighting leukemia). Jacques Herb posted a picture of him and the former Luv' singer on his Facebook page:
In 2004, Jacques and Patty Brard had a minor hit with "Huilen is voor jou te laat" which peaked at #64 on the Dutch Single Top 100. In 1970, this song was originally performed by Corry en de Rekels (a group fronted by Corry Konings).

Yesterday afternoon, Bonnie St. Claire & José Hoebee performed at the Crown Studios in Aalsmeer during the festivisties of the Flower Parade (Bloemencorso). One of my Facebook contacts "Karin Angeleyes" has posted a video of the duo performing their iconic classic hit "Zoals Vrienden Doen". José even asked two members of the audience to take the place of "Patty" and "Marga" to join her on stage. A man interpreted the role of "Patty" and Karin did "Marga". These new "Luv' singers" lip-synched to "You're the Greatest Lover" and did the famous dance routines ("Shananananananana").

35 years ago, Luv's first album, entitled "With Luv'", entered the Dutch charts. It later became a big selling record in the Netherlands and the neighbouring countries. This release was a milestone in the ladies' career and achieved cult status among the fans.
Background
1978 was a special year for the girls. "U.O.Me" was their breakthrough in their homeland. The follow-up single "You're the Greatest Lover" was a bigger success: this million seller hit the number one spot in some European territories and even charted in South Africa (see article posted on July 29th 2013). The next step was to put out a full-length album. The trio's first LP was released by Philips/Phonogram in late August 1978. The production of this opus was supervised by Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer who wrote all the songs under the pseudonym "Janschen & Janschens", with the exception of "Don Juanito de Carnaval" (the cover version of "A far l'amore comincia tu", the 1977 hit of Raffaella Carrà). "With Luv'" was a perfect blend of ABBA-esque sounds (My Man, Dream Dream), Latin American and Spanish orchestrations (U.O.Me, You're the Greatest Lover, Don Juanito de Carnaval), Disco (Everybody's Shaking Hands On Broadway), Pop music (Who Do You Wanna Be) and Soft Rock (Get Ready). One important aspect of the record was its iconic sleeve with the three sexy singers posing in an airfield in the Canary Islands. The pictures for the front and back covers of the LP were taken by Claude Vanheye. This artist had already photographed the "crème de la crème" of the 1960s and 1970s: Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Iggy Pop...

Commercial response and chart performance
As a manufactured pop formation which targeted youngsters, Luv' was more successful on the singles chart than on the albums chart. Indeed, 7" singles were popular among teenagers in the 1970s. With Luv' entered the Dutch charts on September 2nd 1978. It later peaked at #6 on the LP Top 50 and #8 on the Nationale Hitparade Top 50 in the Netherlands, #15 on the Austrian Alben Top 25 and #16 on the Danish year-end chart (BT Hitliste). The LP was a minor hit in Germany where it reached the 50th position. The album eventually turned platinum in Holland (100.000 copies) and silver in Denmark (25.000 copies).

Release and distribution
Patty, Marga and José at the release party of "With Luv'
The album release party took place at the Hilversum Airport on August 22, 1978. With Luv' came out in various editions - all depending on which countries the release took place. Philips/Phonogram licensed the rights for the record to various labels around the world (Carrere Records in Germany, PGB RTB in Yugoslavia, Mercury Records in Canada...).

The 2012-2013 season was very hectic for Patty Brard. She worked as a freelance TV personality on several projects for two TV networks: RTL 5 and SBS 6. But as a promoter of the "team spirit" she wanted to belong to "one family". That's what happened when she signed an exclusive contract with SBS (see news poted on August 31st 2013). Miss Brard told Weekend magazine that she didn't appreciate the way RTL's management reacted to her wish to be part of one TV channel. "People from the business considered my comments in the press as an application for a job and the heads of RTL were cynical towards me," the diva said. Now she's back for good on SBS 6. "I'm so happy thanks to my exclusive two-year deal with SBS 6. I'm so proud! I'm not allowed to say what I'm going to do but WE will do it. "WE", I'm saying "WE". What a nice feeling!," she added.
Cornald "Calimero" Maas at the latest Amsterdam Gay Pride in early August 2013
Patty Brard's latest column in Weekend magazine deals with her special relationship with Dutch TV personality Cornald Maas. The former Luv' singer strongly criticized his presentation of Amsterdam Gay Pride on AVRO channel (see news posted on August 7th 2013). She called him a "sweaty Calimero". She also wrote about his rude joke on her at the Televizier-Ring Gala (Dutch TV awards). Recently, Patty and him met at a party after a Glennis Grace's concert. They talked about their dispute and Cornald promised that he would never read a stupid story from an autocue during ceremonies.

Patty Brard told Privé magazine that she enjoyed people's reactions in the street. As a Dutch celebrity she draws attention. "Every day people call me. Yesterday a couple of dustmen said to me: "Hey Pat! Girlie, how are you?" This is unique to me. People react in a nice way. In the past, it used to be different," the diva explained.
Now she always tries to be kind. "If you're hysterical on TV, people are also hysterical in the street. I learned a lot from Gerard Joling who is always kind to everybody. Now I feel better than in the past," she added.
Yesterday, St. Nicholas movie "Sinterklaas en de Pepernoten Chaos" was presented to the press at the The Grand Hotel in Amsterdam. The cast of the film (including Gerard Joling and Patty Brard) was in a very good mood. As always, "Pat & Geer" were hilarious when they answered the questions of the journalists.

1997 - 2004: Feud
Luv' in November 2004
In 1993, Luv' enjoyed a cheerful reunion and exposure in the media (see previous Chapter). Their "Luv' Gold" compilation sold quite well. The only dark cloud on the horizon was Patty Brard's bankruptcy. But the Indo-Dutch entertainer was a survivor and in 1994 she was back on television as a presenter. The group performed occasionally on stage until 1996 and then disbanded.
Soon after this umpteenth break-up, tensions between Patty and José Hoebee appeared. Their feud was covered by celebrity gossip magazines. Patty wanted to make up with her former colleague. Accompanied by a camera crew, she met José in a parking garage with a bouquet of roses to bury the hatchet. But José refused to be filmed although she was not opposed to make peace in private. A reconciliation seemed impossible.
* Patty: Reality Queen
In the late 1990s and at the turn of the 21st century, Patty was a familiar face on Veronica channel with programs such as "Brard gaat extreem", "Brard", "Veronica Goes Gay", "Patty", "Patty gaat extreem" and "Absolutely Patty".
Patty interviewed Marilyn Manson in late 1998
2001 saw her involvement in reality television when she hosted the third season of Holland's "Big Brother".
Patty on "Big Brother - the Battle" (2001)
Inspired by the success of "The Osbournes" on MTV, the reality series "Patty's Posse" aired on Yorin in 2003 and featured her domestic life, her friends and her family (her daughter Priscilla and her third husband René Muthert). The show was high in the ratings and each episode averaged 850.000 viewers.

Theme song from "Patty' Posse" (2003)
During the craze for "Patty's Posse", La Brard wanted to take advantage of the nostalgia for Luv' and formed her own girl group called "Enuv'" with two ex-members of "De Frogettes" Anouskha de Wolff and Marian van Noort. The ladies performed cover versions of hits from the 1970s and 1980s (Luv', Dolly Dots, Vanessa...). The group rapidly disbanded.
Thanks to her popularity, Dutch journalist Pieter Ploeg wrote her biography ("De Naakte Waarheid: The Naked Truth") which was published in 2003.
Front cover of Patty's biography
In the autumn of 2004, she starred in "Patty's Fort", a Yorin program with other celebrities (including Marga Scheide) as they were having a therapy which consisted of fasting, yoga and meditation. It caused a sensation and was unfairly known as the "Klysma show" because of a segment showing Miss Brard having an enema. During the broadcast of "Patty's Fort", the larger-than-life entertainer was devastated when her brother Robert passed away at age 43 due to a kidney disease.
Marga and Patty on "Patty's Fort" (2004)
* Marga: Tragedy and business
As for Marga, her world was tumbling down when her partner, record producer Jacques Zwart died of a heart attack in Ibiza in April 2003. It took her months to get over this sudden loss. She continued the online music store "www.selectcd.nl" launched by Zwart in 2001. In 2004, she set up another online service specialized in the merchandising of Dutch celebrities (www.selectidols.com). These companies were short-lived and by 2007 they were dissolved.
* José: solo comeback
José Hoebee who retired from show business in the 1990s was the owner of a video rental shop (The Movie Store) for one year and a half in Best, a village near Eindhoven, NL. She sold her business in the summer of 2003. With the help from Corry Konings (a popular singer in the Netherlands) and her booking agency (CK Produkties), José decided to resurrect her singing career. She also started to write a weekly column on the now-defunct "Muziekmaken.nl" site. She told anecdotes about the glorious years with Luv', expressed her opinion on Dutch entertainment and replied to Patty's attacks in the press. In early 2004, she recorded under the pseudonym "Stuff" a dance oriented cover version of a Four Tops classic hit ("Walk Away René") downloadable on internet. Moreover, she sang two tracks as a guest artist on a tribute album to Doris Day (Marjan Berger meets Doris Day). In the fall of 2004, José hosted a music talent show (Tijd Voor Muziek) on a Dutch local channel (VSM TV). Her husband, Will Hoebee collaborated on the production of this program. On December 13. 2004, the singer was a witness at Bonnie St. Claire's wedding. The ceremony was broadcast live on SBS 6's "Shownieuws".
José performing "Who's sorry now"
* Luv's 25th anniversary The quarrel between Patty and José didn't stop the fans from enjoying projects which focused on the legendary female pop trio. Budget-priced compilations came out during this period. In September 2001, René Moonen launched Luv's official fansite by courtesy of Marga and José. In April 2003, the first fan club meeting took place with José and Ria Thielsch (member of the 1980-1981 line-up). Marga was invited but because of Jacques' death she could not come.
Ria & José at Luv's first fan club meeting (2003)
Six months later, Universal Music (in association with René Moonen, Hans van Hemert Productions and CNR) released the double CD "25 Jaar Na Waldolala" to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Luv's breakthrough. The compilation included smash hits, Spanish versions of four songs, previously unreleased tracks on CD and solo recordings by José and Marga. Will Hoebee, José, Ria Thielsch and Hans van Hemert attended the album release party. Patty was not involved in this project as she was then in conflict with the producers and her former colleagues. A DVD was supposed to come out simultaneously with the double CD. However, Miss Brard vetoed this video collection because of her right of publicity.
René Moonen, José Hoebee, Hans van Hemert and Ria Thielsch at the release party of "25 Jaar Na Waldolala" (2003)
In November 2004, a meeting between René Moonen, the three original Luv' ladies and Van Hemert was held in secret in order to be reconciled. The trio was considering a comeback. But a few days later, Patty appeared on "Jensen!", a late-night talk show on RTL 5. The enfant terrible of Luv' was a bit drunk and insulted José. The efforts to plan a revival suddenly collapsed....Fortunately, the following year, happy news overshadowed this sad event.
